As summer draws to a close, and the evenings get a bit cooler why not visit Amore Ristorante Italiano in Kenilworth to experience true Italian culinary tradition? Earlier this year, Food Travel Wine and Amore Restaurant launched what is set to be a regular event, An Italian Feast. 4 courses, each paired with a glass of wine to suit the dish. Wines were sourced locally from Idiom in Stellenbosch, and internationally from Umbria in Italy.
The menu was made up of 4 courses, each served tapas style. Guests were treated to 3 ‘tapas’ dishes per course.
3s di Antipasti
To begin, Primi or antipasti consisted of a collection of colourful bite-sized treats. Caprese, bruschetta with red pepper and a slice of traditional parmigiana melanzane. This was paired with a glass of the Pinot Grigio – Bianco de Stellenbosch. This typical Italian wine did not disappoint. The crispness of the wine cut through the rich, yet somewhat light flavours of the antipasti.
3s di Gnocchi
The first course, a trio of gnocchi paired with a glass of Falesco Vitiano Rose from the Falesco region in Umbria, Italy. It was the perfect companion to the creamy and light gnocchi. The trio included
Gnocchi Coppa e Asiago, Gnocchi melanzane e stracchino and Gnocchi salsiccia e piselli. Each dish completely unique from the others but all showcasing gnocchi in its most traditional form. The rose was chosen to accompany these dishes based its character. Full-bodied and persistent, it is soft and balanced with a savoury finish.
3s di Pasta
The second course included a selection of pasta, all made fresh a few hours before we all arrived. Amore sources all produce both locally and from Italy, using only the best ingredients. The pasta course consisted of Tagliatelle Bolognese, Canolli ricotta e spinaci, Raviolli di zucca. The wine selection for this course was the Rosso Sangiovese Barbera from Idiom in Stellenbosch. A lively red wine with aromatic notes of raspberries, sweet cherries and Prosciutto. With delicate oaking contributing to both fruity and savoury notes on the palate.
3s di dessert
The finale, dessert, was Torta ricotta e pere, Sbricciolata and Profiteroles al cioccolato. Guests were invited to have coffee, or enjoy their dessert with something else on the wine list. Amore has an impressive collection of both local and international wines. They have both Italian styles as well as more traditional South African cultivars.
