Tucked away in the bustling Thrupps centre on Oxford, this modern European eatery is an urban oasis. Perfect for escaping the chaos of Johannesburg for a few hours, Farro is the brainchild of British Chef and Proprietor, Alex Windebank and his wife, Eloise. The interior boasts a simple, industrial look with clean lines and minimal settings allowing the food to take centre stage.
First moving to Johannesburg two years ago, they opened the now well-known pop-up, Kramerville Bakery. This gave them the time they needed to dip their toes into the Jozi food culture and find a more permanent spot for a restaurant. It was about finding the right space for their vision.
Farro opened in March 2018 with a focus on modern European cooking using African flavours and ingredients. Everything is ethically and seasonally sourced from local suppliers. The dishes are not about fussy techniques but rather the simplicity of serving a great plate of food.

Cheese and onion crackers, Beignets with sumac and smoked paprika.

Octopus with chickpea and anchovy.

Kingklip, peas and prosciutto.

Panna cotta, peach and white chocolate sorbet.
The menu changes daily so there is always a new dish to try. The service is exceptional, prices great considering the area and the drink menu is carefully curated so that there is something for everyone. Open for both lunch and dinner, Chef Alex recommends dinner if you really want to see what the Farro philosophy is all about.
