Tucked away in the northwestern corner of the Island of Zanzibar, you’ll find the fishing village of Nungwi. With powder white beaches, palm trees and aquamarine water for miles, this side of the island has become a sought after holiday destination. With activities ranging from snorkelling, swimming with dolphins, visiting the turtle sanctuary or sunset dhow cruises, it is no surprise why. Right at the heart of the action, with its very own beach, is the Z hotel.
Just a 3-hour flight from Johannesburg and a scenic 1 and a half drive from the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, the Z hotel is an oasis in amongst the activity of Nungwi. It is conveniently located close to all the action, whilst still offering the seclusion and relaxation of a dream beach holiday. With 3 restaurants, a rooftop bar, a boutique and a spa, there is plenty to keep you busy. Breakfast is included in the rate and served at Saruche restaurant until 10 am every morning. An infinity pool flows directly onto the private beach, offering the best sunset views on the island.
Sunset brings all the locals to Nungwi beach, for swimming, volleyball or just watching the fisherman come in with their haul. It is a great time of day to visit the main beach for a sundowner and take in the vibe. If you feel like dining away from the hotel, you could choose to have a beach BBQ at one of the many neighbouring restaurants, all within close walking distance.
Where to eat
The Z Hotel’s al fresco restaurant, Saruche, is open for supper offering a contemporary African-European fusion menu along with locally-sourced fish and seafood. Whether you choose to dine on the beach or the timber deck, the atmosphere is one of simple elegance.
For a more laid back dining experience, Cinnamon at the Z hotel offers a selection of Asian fusion starters and simple classics like burgers, salads and fish and chips.
Langi Langi’s Marhaba Restaurant is a local Zanzibari spot very famous for their Traditional Zanzibari cuisine and spicy coconut based curries. It is considered one of the best on the island offering some of the best Zanzibari food with a variety of fresh from the ocean seafood. The restaurant is cash only and mains are about $9.
Baraka Beach is a short walk from The Z hotel and offers fresh seafood daily at reasonable prices. In the evenings, the restaurant moves out onto the beach and a table of seafood is set up for guests to choose from. The chef grills over an open flame to order. Baraka Beach does have a card machine on site.
Activities
The beach is full of beach boys offering deals on watersports, snorkelling and other activities. You can choose to bargain with them or alternatively, as advised by the Z Hotel, book through their dive desk. If you want to venture further than the beach, Safari by Z offers tailor-made packages to see the rest of Zanzibar and Tanzania.
