In the heart of Stellenbosch, surrounded by the hills of Devon Valley lies an unusually striking building. This is home to Louisvale wine farm and function venue.

The building was designed by award-winning architect, Christof Albertyn and represents the mixture of African and European building traditions. It is modelled on the Khoekhoen who built the first man-made domed structure in the area and the white gabled, Cape Dutch style, that had been introduced by European Colonialists in the 17thCentury, and which is the original homestead built in 1924.

The two buildings are married by a floating glass arch and together, they frame the 280-degree views of the three million-year-old Cape Mountains. With the most magnificent vistas and stunning surroundings, Louisvale offers the perfect setting for any occasion and can accommodate up to 150 guests.

The wine
Louisvale started producing wines in 1988 and prides itself on its signature award-winning Chardonnay wines and for being one of South Africa’s pioneers of this cultivar. The winemaker and his team are passionate about the ‘Art of Chardonnay” and are tirelessly committed to the task of crafting and creating some exceptional wines from this varietal.

So far, Louisvale has won numerous prestigious wine awards and has won three Golds at the recent Michaelangelo awards for its 2018 Chardonnay, and for its Brut and Rose MCC wines.

Since 1994, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have been sourced from the neighbouring vineyard where the winemaker, Simon Smith of 22 years, partners with the owner in managing the vines to Louisvale‘s exact specifications to ensure the wines retain their Louisvale character.

The food
Executive chef Kirstie du Toit’s philosophy is seasonality and locally sourced produce. Her bistro-style dishes are carefully curated to pair with the exceptional Louisvale wines. The hearty portions and ‘comfort food’ attracts loyal local patrons and international visitors alike.

Kirstie studied at The Culinary Academy (TCA) at Backsberg and comes from a family of bakers and farmers. Her passion for cooking started at an early age. Dishes may change with the season but are grounded in what she’s learnt from her youth. Expect classic dishes with a modern twist!
